The Missing Step in Your Haircare Routine: Exfoliate Your Scalp

Have you ever thought to exfoliate your scalp? It is pretty common self-care knowledge that using a gentle exfoliator on your face and body once week a week can remove dead skin build-up and help improve the quality and appearance of your skin. Exfoliating buffs away the sluff that can cause your skin to lose its luster.

While most of us shampoo and condition our hair regularly, we have for far too long overlooked taking care of the skin beneath our hair. Our scalp is part of our largest external organ but is one of the most neglected parts of our body’s protective layer. If you don’t exfoliate your scalp, you are missing an essential step in your haircare routine.

We’ll cut you some slack though! It is not currently common knowledge that your scalp needs to be exfoliated. But, once you do it, you will probably never skip this step again! Fortunately, you only really need to exfoliate your scalp once a week or every other week depending on how much hair product you use daily and how dry or oily your scalp is.

Your scalp is prone to build-up caused by hair products, dead skin, excess oil, and environmental pollutants. Excessive build-up can make your hair appear dulls and lifeless, as well as stunt hair growth and even over time thin out your hair strands. If you want shiny, healthy, and voluminous hair, you have to maintain a scalp environment that is free of debris. Whether you have a dry or oily scalp, adding a gentle exfoliator into your haircare routine will improve the condition your scalp, which in turn will promote healthy hair growth.

There are a lot of great scalp exfoliators on the market for all different hair types and budgets. We love Kerastase’s Soin Gommage-Rénovateur (from the Chronologiste collection) and their two new Fusio scrubs, Apaiant and Energistant. If you aren’t sure what scrub is best for you out of these three or you would like some other recommendations, ask us the next time you come to see us. When you do you weekly exfoliating treatment, you can also plan to do your weekly deep conditioning mask right after.
