How Often Should I Wash My Hair?

Oh, what a big question of grand debate! There is no universally correct answer, but, spoiler alert, the answer is not every day!

Washing your hair too much or too little can cause an array of undesirable conditions, such as dandruff, irritation, itchiness, hair loss, breakage, flatness, greasiness, dullness, and even scalp inflammation.

If you have…

Oily Hair

If you have oily hair, you may feel the strong desire to wash your hair every day or any time you hop in the shower. But, don’t! Trying to rid your scalp of all its oil will actually cause your scalp to produce even more oil to compensate. Instead of washing every day, wash your hair every other day, and use a gentle, sulfate-free clarifying shampoo to help break up the oil without completely stripping your hair bare.

Dry Hair

If you have dry hair, you only really need to wash your hair one to two times a week. In between, if you need a little refresher, you can try a dry shampoo like Paris Claire’s Freshen Up dry shampoo.

Fine Hair

You don’t want to overdo it if you have fine hair. Washing your hair every day will only cause your lightweight locks to dry out and appear straw-like. Instead, opt for every other day.

Thick Hair

If your hair is luxuriously thick, you only need to suds up once or twice a week.

Curly or Wavy Hair

To keep your curly hair voluminous and defined, instead of dry and frizzy, try washing only two or three times a week. Seek out a clarifying shampoo, and then once a week, try a co-wash cleanser for a boost of moisture.

Damaged Hair

If your hair is a bit on the damaged side due to heat styling, coloring, and chemical treatments, you’ll want to only wash your strands two or three times a week. To counteract the damage, use a color-safe, lightweight, moisturizing shampoo.

Try: Paris Claire Salon’s Marula & Grapeseed Shampoo or Blueberry Beetroot Shampoo

Remember, though, the right amount of washes per week can vary since we are each entirely unique. This is just meant to be a guideline.
