We all know that there is nothing quite like having your hair properly washed by a professional hairstylist. Aside from the tantalizing scalp massage that accompanies this deep wash, there is something about this particular wash that leaves your hair feeling cleaner, lighter, fresher, and healthier than ever. What makes getting your hair washed at the salon so superior to when you do it at home? And why does it feel good?
Fortunately for you, we aren’t a salon that keeps secrets! There is a reason why your hair is so squeaky clean and shiny, and why you feel particularly relaxed and revitalized after a professional hair shampooing and conditioning.
First of all, your scalp is covered in a web of sensitive nerve endings. It is also a place on your body that isn’t regularly touched by someone else (unless you are lucky enough to have a significant other who gives you regular head massages!). For these reasons, having your head massaged stimulates your sensory cortex and signals to your brain to release the feel-good hormones dopamine and serotonin. The release of these brain chemicals promotes happiness, pleasure, and an all-around sense of well-being. So, it’s no wonder you feel relaxed and joyous as you sit back with your eyes closed and have your hair and head tended to.
But, aside from feeling fantastic, there is undoubtedly a noticeable difference in the way your hair feels and looks after it is professionally washed (and then cut and styled). While you might wonder what the secret is, it turns out it’s not really so much a secret as it is a matter of technique and products.
How to Properly Wash Your Hair like a Professional Hairstylist
Shampoo, Rinse, Repeat
The best way to obtain super clean hair is to first shampoo with a clarifying, deep cleansing, and/or exfoliating shampoo. After this initial wash, use a second shampoo to remove any additional debris and dirt and target your particular hair needs (volume, frizz-control, hydration, shine). This dual wash will leave your scalp and locks feeling as fresh as when you have them shampooed at the salon. For recommendations on the best shampoos for your particular hair, ask your stylist next time you come to see us.
And, while you are at it, take your time and yourself to a nice little scalp massage!
Don’t Condition Your Roots
You should avoid conditioning your roots, as this can clog pores, promote excess oil production, and weigh down your hair. You only need to condition from about the mid-way point to the tips of your hair.
Adjust the Water Temperature
While scalding hot water might feel great to some, it’s not that great for your hair. Ideally, you should use warm water when you are in the shampoo phase as this opens up the cuticles, and then seal your cuticles back up by rinsing out the conditioner with cool or cold water.
Use the Right Products for Your Hair Type
Make sure you are using products that are specifically designed for your hair type and hair needs. The good news is there are products for every type of hair! Treat yourself to high-quality products that are designed to bring out the best of what you’ve been born with! Also, if you are planning on blow drying or using any heated styling tools, make sure that you apply a heat-protecting product to your damp hair.
While we can’t guarantee that following this hair washing approach will leave you feeling exactly the way you do after we wash, conditioner, and style your hair, it will be pretty close and at least hold you over until you come to see us again!
