At Paris Claire Salon in Coral Gables, haircare is our passion! We pride ourselves on our expertise and decades-long accumulation of knowledge relating to all things hair. We can cut, color, style, and treat your hair with the best products, in our opinion, on the market so that you walk out of our salon looking and feeling your absolute best. However, to maintain healthy and happy hair, we recommend following these 10 hair love and care commandments.
Hair Commandment #1: Brush Out the Knots Before You Get in the Shower
When your hair is wet, it is more vulnerable. Brushing your hair when it is wet, especially when detangling is necessary, stretches out your strands, which causes wear and tear and split ends. To protect your locks and keep them strong, only brush your hair when it is dry.
If you are going to brush your hair wet, make sure you use a wide-tooth comb and do so gently.
Brushing dry hair also distributes the natural oils from your scalp down to the end of your hair. Hello, natural anti-frizz!
An extra bonus is that your hair will be smooth and ready to style post-shower!
Hair Care Commandment #2: Turn Down the Temp
High heat, whether in the shower or from your styling tools, is not healthy hair-friendly. Heat damage can make your hair appear dry and brittle. It can also exaggerate the appearance of split ends and cause frizz.
If you can't live without your scorching hot shower, make sure you rinse your hair with cool water as your last step in your shower routine. This will help seal your cuticles.
As far as heat styling tools, try and use the lowest setting possible to achieve your desired outcome, and ALWAYS use a heat protectant.
One of our favorite products is Kerastase Thermique Regenerant Blow Dry Primer. All of Kerastase's heat protectants are amazing, though!
Hair Commandment #3: Avoid Toxic Ingredients
The following 12 toxins are found in A LOT of personal care products, including hair care products. In an era of choices, why not choose products that are more natural, environmentally conscious, and don't bring harm to your hair and health?
After years of listening to what their clients want, Paris Claire Salon used their expertise to create an exclusive Paris Claire Salon product line with your needs and wants in mind. Something really important to them during the development stage was avoiding harmful ingredients like sulfates and parabens. The end result, an extensive line of products for all different hair types and needs that not only smell amazing and do wonders for your hair, they are also totally safe!
Hair Care Commandment #4: Embrace Your Natural Hair Texture
Many of us have a love-hate relationship with our hair. Brunettes want to be blonde. Those with stick-straight hair want curls. There's not enough volume or way too much...you know, things of that nature.
But, when we try to manipulate our hair every day to be what it is not naturally, we are causing damage.
That's not to say you can't ever curl or straighten your hair, dye it or pump up the volume with products, but giving your hair a chance to be what it really wants to be is really beneficial and healthy.
Think of it like you are giving your hair a break, a breather, a much-deserved opportunity to be wild and free! And who knows, you might even learn to love what you were born with!
There are so many wonderful products and techniques available to help you embrace and bring out the best in your natural hair type. Claire and Laurent can help you put together the perfect haircare kit for your wonderful, natural hair!
Hair Commandment #5: Make Time for a Mask
Hair masks are the perfect way to give your mane a little extra TLC.
The benefits of treating yourself to a weekly hair mask include shinier, softer, stronger hair; reduced hair breakage and damage, less frizz, and a healthier scalp. Plus, since most hair masks recommend leaving it on for 10 to 30 minutes, that's 10 to 30 minutes of just you time!
With summer just around the corner, try Kerastase's Masque Aprés Soleil, which is perfect for sun-exposed hair. The smell is heavenly too!
Hair Care Commandment #6: Let Your Hair Air Dry Every Once in a While
As long as you are using a heat protectant and setting your styling tools on the lowest heat possible to achieve your desired outcome, it's totally ok to blow-dry, curl, or straighten your hair. However, heat styling your hair every single day will eventually cause some degree of damage.
Try giving your hair a break once a week. Maybe the same day that you decide to indulge in a deep conditioning mask! Your hair will thank you!!
Commandment #7: Protect Your Hair from Sun, Salt, and Chlorine
Summer in South Florida means plenty of sunshine, salty beach days, and beat-the-heat dips in the pool. And while all of these things are so glorious, summertime elements can be harsh on your hair.
Fret not, though! With a few easy practices and some amazing products, you can keep your hair happy and healthy during this wonderful season of outdoor fun.
1. Apply a leave-in conditioner or coconut oil to your hair before you go swimming. Try Paris Claire's Miracle Leave-in. 😇
2. After going in the sea or pool, rinse your hair with fresh water. 💧
3. Wear a hat or cute headscarf when in direct sunshine. 👒
4. Keep your hair moisturized. Try Paris Claire Salon's Marula and Grapeseed conditioner, which contains SPF. 🍇
Hair Commandment #8: Keep Up with Your Trims
Getting your hair trimmed at least every 8 to 12 weeks is key to maintaining healthy-looking hair. Waiting for splits ends is a sign that you've waited too long. Even if you are growing your hair out, it is recommended that you get at least a half-inch cut off every 3 to 4 months max.
Penciling in your quarterly trim is the equivalent of penciling in time for you! Plus, you can't deny how amazing having your hair washed by someone else feels and how fresh and free you feel after you walk out of our salon doors with a perfect blowout! 😉
Hair Care Commandment #9: Less Is More
That "effortless, natural look" is so in right now, especially with summer just days away! 🌞✂️👙
Don't spend hours trying to obtain "hair perfection."
Over-styling and product-loading are not necessary! If you follow the other 8 commandments (i.e., keep up with your trims, protect your hair from heat, do a weekly mask, etc.) and embrace the natural flow of your hair, you'll be surprised how much better your mane looks and feels. That stiff-as-a-board look is so yesteryear!
Hair Commandment #10: Eat and Drink for Healthy Hair
You've heard the phrase, "You are what you eat; well, you are, and so is your hair! If you want healthy, strong, lustrous, resistant, shiny, beautiful hair, you've got to eat for it (and drink too).
Here's what you need for hair health: 🍊🍌🍓🍅🥑🥕🥬🥦🍠
Vitamin A: sweet potatoes, pumpkins, carrots, spinach, kale
Vitamin B: bananas, broccoli, chickpeas
Vitamin C: citrus, peppers, tomatoes, strawberries
Vitamin E: sunflower seeds, dark leafy greens, avocado
Zinc: lentils, spinach, pumpkin seeds
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds
And, let's not forget WATER. 💦
A good rule of thumb is to drink at least two liters of water every day. Chronic dehydration can make your skin and hair appear lackluster and parched—and nobody wants that look!
Following these 10 hair commandments and coming in to see us every few months is the winning combination for best hair days every day!
